Joker, the long anticipated comic-book movie Directed by Todd Philips is soon to be entering its 6th week in theaters. Since the movie’s October release, Joker has received a total of $938 million in worldwide Box office revenue, beating out Deadpool 2 for the top position (Deadpool 2 having grossed $785 million worldwide). The film has also been time and again successful at maintaining its lead over the recently released “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” on a weekly basis, but let’s be honest, is it really that difficult to surpass recycled gobble-dee-gook from Disney? …Just some food for thought.
For those rare people unfamiliar with the story of the Joker film, starring Joaquin Phoenix follows the story of Arthur Fleck, a mentally ill clown who, in a matter of weeks watches his whole life collapse to pieces, leading him to become the demented archenemy of Batman. One of the inspirations for this movie was of course, Alan Moore & Brian Bolland’s graphic novel “Batman: The Killing Joke“. Though not the basis of this movie, The Killing Joke’s central theme of “Just one bad day” is present throughout the movie in addition to the now famous Joker quote from the novel “If I’m going to have a past, I would prefer it to be multiple choice”. And it’s that underlying theme that generates the massive amount of controversy, and I not only speak of mental illness or of the uncertainty of life, or even the lies and hypocrisy of those who want to make themselves seem pure. Rather, what happens when a little bit of genuine honesty is introduced into a society built on lies, deceit and hypocrisy. And what happens is…chaos. The Joker may well be the Lenny Bruce of our era, laughs and all.
