The much awaited movie based on the popular SEGA/Nintendo game has finally been released into theaters. On the premiere date on Valentines Day (pun not intended) the movie received $21 Million through box office sales. Originally expected to gain $40-50 Million in the box office, the movie is now expected to reach up to $60 Million by the end of it’s fourth day in theaters. As of today, February 15th Sonic The Hedgehog has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 64% fresh from critics and a surprising 94% from audiences.
Given that most movies based on video games rarely do well, as has been shown by 1993’s “Super Mario Bros”, 2015’s Hitman: Agent 47″ and 2016’s “Assassin’s Creed” to name a few, it comes as a bit of a surprise that this is one of the few that received more money than negative feedback. This is especially surprising due to how furious fans were when the original CGI design for Sonic was released to the public. Thankfully the movie developers viewed this as a form of feedback as opposed to monkey chatter (as many film studios have done in the past).
The movie has been reviewed as a return of the original comedy style of Jim Carrey which put him on the map in movies such as “The Mask” and “Liar, Liar”. The newer design for Sonic has also gotten great reviews making the theory that collaboration between fans and studios can actually help improve the story and cinematography of a movie, as opposed to making it worse, actually has more validity than producers are willing to admit.
