As a part of his collaboration with Mercedes Benz, Virgil Abloh re-imagined the Mercedes Benz iconic G-Class car as a 1:3 model for their colloaborative project’ “Geländewagen”. The model exclusively sold at Sotheby’s Contemporary Curated Auction for $160,000.
The model (called the Geländewagen Maquette) measures 74.8″ by 37.4″ by 31.1″ and is the only one of its kind. The materials used were: synthetic resin, laminate, glass fiber, carbon fiber, wood, metal, and textile. The model is an exact replica of the Mercedes Benz G-Class.
At the start of the project last month it was announced by Abloh that the proceeds of the project will be donated to his charity of choice “The Post-Modern” Scholarship fund. The charity was launched earlier this year to bring greater support to Black, African American and African fashion students that show serious promise with their academic work and achievements.
Abloh was quoted on the project as saying: “My ultimate goal in this project with Mercedes-Benz is inspiring young artists, engineers, designers to question the status quo, in addition to experimenting with my own design abilities, Mercedes-Benz is a brand that stands for luxury and exceptional performance. Truly a perfect chassis to interject modern artists’ ideas of what the future can be stylistically.”
