Van Halen Co-founder and lead guitarist, Eddie Van Halen has passed away at age 65 from throat cancer. According to TMZ sources, Eddie Van Halen “died at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica on Tuesday”.
By his side through the thick of it was his brother Alex, his wife, Janie, his Ex Wife, Valerie Bertinelli and his son Wolfgang (who served as Van Halen’s bassist starting in 2006). Wolfgang took to Instagram to mourn the loss of his father:
“He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.”
TMZ also reported that: “Though he was a heavy smoker for years he believes he developed throat cancer from a metal guitar pick he used to hold in his mouth”.
Over the course of the past 5 years (2019 and before) Eddie made several trips between the U.S. and Germany for radiation treatments. He recently underwent a round of chemotherapy treatments. Doctors had discovered that in the past 72 hours that his lung cancer had moved to many of his organs, most notably his brain.
I’m sure we are all mourning the loss of Eddie Van Halen, one of the greatest musicians of all time. Our hearts go out to his friends and loved ones.
