In light of the recent protests in Wisconsin over the fatal shooting of 17-year old Alvin Cole, rappers Jay-Z and Roc Nation have decided to post bonds for several of the protesters. On Thursday, the social justice arm of Roc nation, Hoy paid the court fees for Alvin Cole’s mother and 3 sisters. The court fees and bonds costs have not been disclosed.
The officer responsible for killing Cole, Joseph Mensah was not convicted of any criminal charge. The statement from the Milwauke County District Attorney, John Chisholm is as follows:
“In this case, there is sufficient evidence that Officer Mensah had an actual subjective belief that deadly force was necessary and that belief was objectively reasonable, I do not believe that the State could disprove self-defense or defense of others in this case and therefore could not meet the burden required to charge Officer Mensah.”
This statment subsequently led to mass protests and inevitable arrests of several protestors. Diana Diaz of Team Roc released this statement in opposition to the court’s ruling:
“Our hearts break for the family of Alvin Cole and the Wauwatosa community. Not only did the District Attorney’s Office fail to hold Officer Joseph Mensah accountable for killing Alvin, but the local police also arrested and injured Alvin’s mother Tracy and his sisters as they peacefully protested alongside Jacob Blake’s father,”
