According to sources, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be developing a reboot of the Scorpion King franchise. Johnson won’t be returning to the role of The Scorpion King Mathayus with his heavily booked schedule. Although he is reported to be serving as a producer of the reboot along with the likes of Hiram & Dany Garcia with Straight Outta Compton writer, Jonathan Herman will be penning the script.
Universal is also looking for a replacement to fill the role of The Rock’s Scorpion King, as well as a director for the film.In spite of the original 2002 plot, the reboot will be set to take place in “a contemporary take set in modern times.” It’s fully known that the first ever acting role that The Rock took on was the 2001’s The Mummy Returns, later reprising the role for The Mummy Returns spinoff following the legendary Scorpion King.
Johnson had this to say about the reboot: “The Scorpion King was my very first role ever on the silver screen and I’m honored and excited to reimagine and deliver this cool mythology to a whole new generation,” said The Rock. “I wouldn’t have had the career I’m lucky enough to have had it not been for The Scorpion King and I’m thrilled that we at Seven Bucks Productions can help create those same opportunities for other hardworking actors today. I believe Jonathan Herman will put in the hard work to deliver a fantastic script for our global audience.”
