According to sources, Nelly is set to play the late Rock n’ Roll pioneer Chuck Berry in the upcoming biopic based-on the life of Buddy Holly titled “Clear Lake”.
The cast is set to include the likes of Colin Hanks (Dexter, Fargo) and Diane Guerrero (Orange Is the New Black, Doom Patrol). Guerrero will be playing Buddy Holly’s wife Maria Elena Holly and Hanks is set to play Buddy Holly’s Manager Norman Petty.
Clear Lake follows the story of Buddy Holly, in addition to other famous musicians in the late 1950’s as they impact and change the world around them, bringing about the era of Rock n’ Roll, alongside their influence on the Civil Rights Movement. The film will be directed by Driving Miss Daisy’s Bruce Beresford and the script will be penned by Patrick Shanahan.
It’s been pointed out by Pitchfork that both Chuck Berry and Nelly were the primary act in a free concert in St. Louis (where they both originated) back in 2010. Nelly’s last feature film acting role was in 2014’s ‘Reach Me’, though he has only appeared in 3 movies most notably the Adam Sandler led remake of The Longest Yard. He was also was in a recurring role in Kevin Hart’s ‘Real Husbands Of Hollywood’
