Discord, the popular voice chat app has reportedly gained a valuation of $7 billion USD. This is thanks to a new round of funding according to sources. If this is confirmed Discord would have their corporate value doubled over the course of a few months. Back in Jun the platform received an investment of $100 million USD bringing the platform to a $3.5 billion USD valuation.
Even though various other industries have been struggling to evolve with the times during the Coronavirus pandemic, the stay-at-home industries such as social networking and virtual communications have been thriving. That being said, Discord has reaped many benefits as it fits into both categories. Sources report that the monthly active users of the platform have gone up close to 120 million with downloads reaching 800,000 per day.
It’s also been unveiled by Discord that their ambitions are to expand beyond the gaming community. The platform made an announcement back in July that they would be streamlining their functionality via pre-made templates for newer servers. Discord has also chosen to change its homepage to a less gaming-oriented brand stating that the platform is “Your place to talk” in its tagline with only 1 mention of gaming.
