According to sources, rapper JAY-Z has been tied with Quincy Jones for the highest amount of Grammy nominations both having received a total of 80 nominations.
The 2021 nominations come from 3 of his wife Beyoncé’s 2021 Grammy nods. Hov is credited as the songwriter of the song “Black Parade” which in the running for Song Of The Year, in addition to the Best R&B Song as well as the song “Savage” which is in the running for Best Rap Song. This marks the 4th year in a row that JAY-Z has gotten a Grammy nomination, having won an award for Best Urban Contemporary Album in 2019 (the award has since been known as the Best Progressive R&B Album) for the song Everything Is Love alongside Beyoncé.
Following the lack of nominations given to The Weeknd for his newest album titled “After Hours”, the Recording Academy has generated controversy as to how thy conduct their business. The Weeknd called them “corrupt” and made demands for transparency, with artists like Drake behind him. Drizzy himself also also made his concerns known: “I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards and just accept that what once was the highest form of recognition may no longer matter to the artists that exist now and the ones that come after,” said Drake. “It’s like a relative you keep expecting to fix up but they just can’t change their ways.”
