Following the events of the Arecibo Telescope, astronauts all over the world are extremely saddened by the news. For more background on how the receiver (weighing in at 820 tonnes) collapsed, the NSF (National Science Foundation) has just released an official video of the tragedy.
The video which includes sound recorded provides 2 separate angles. The first from the base support tower and the second from a drone that had its focus on the critical anchor bolt that failed from additional tension. It can be seen that all 3 of the support towers in the top sections separated from the 305-meter telescope landing inside the canopy underneath. With the level of destruction via the overwhelming impact of the telescope into the building ranging from shearing columns and snapped support cables, it’s incredible that nobody got injured.
