Is Marijuana Still Illegal?

Less than a week following he ruling from the UN Commission that declassified marijuana as one of the most dangerous drugs, a bill has been passed by the U.S. House Of Reps, decriminalizing cannabis at the federal level. The bill carries the support of 222 Democrats 5 Republicans and the Libertarian Representative Justin Amash and has the goal of striking marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act and removing any criminal consequences for people found in possession of, distributing or manufacturing cannabis products. That in addition to wiping away prior convictions with the goal being to “address the devastating injustices caused by the War on Drugs.”

Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat & the House Majority Leader had this to say on the bill: “Millions of Americans’ lives have been upended as a result of convictions for possessing small amounts of marijuana, and the racial disparities in conviction rates for those offenses are as shocking as they are unjust,” she continued. “That’s why we passed the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act today.”

Democratic Representative Earl Blumenauer followed Rep. Hoyer’s statement with: “We’re not rushing to legalize marijuana. The American people have already done that,” he said. “We’re here because Congress has failed to deal with a disastrous war on drugs and do its part for the over 15 million marijuana users in every one of your districts,” he said. “It’s time for Congress to step up and do its part. We need to catch up with the rest of the American people.”
