It has just been announced by DC Comics that for the first time in history, the mantle of Batman will be taken over by a Black character.
The Next Batman, in line with DC’s Future State series, will focus on Tim Fox the estranged son of Lucius Fox, CEO of Wayne Enterprises and brother of Luke Fox a.k.a. Batwing. The miniseries will span the of 4 books and will be written by John Ridley screenwriter of 12 Years A Slave and will showcase artwork from Diego Rodriguez and Doug Braithwaite.
It was said by Ridley during a recent NY Times interview that his own sons were a huge inspiration for him. “They’re happy for me. They’re great supporters. But they would much rather see Black Panther than 12 Years a Slave, let’s be honest,” said Ridley. ”So to be able to write the next Batman, for them to know that this next Batman is going to be Black, everybody else on the planet can hate it, have a problem with it, denigrate it, but I have my audience and they already love it.”
Future State: The Next Batman will be released on Jan. 5th, 2021 with new issues of the series arriving every other week.
