The official trailer for the Netflix mockumentary titled “Death to 2020” has just been released by Black Mirror creators Annabel Jones and Charlie Brooker.
The Netflix comedy exclusive will be an examination of “the dreadful year that was” from the perspectives of so-called “experts, politicos, monarchs and average citizens” all of which are being played by some of the biggest celebrities in the entertainment business. Samuel L. Jackson will be playing the part of a journalist, Hugh Grant will be portraying a history professor, Silicon Valley’s Kumail Nanjiani will be playing the CEO of a tech company, Tracey Ullman will be filling the role of Queen Elizabeth II, Lisa Kudrow will be playing a “non-official” conservative spokeswoman, Leslie Jones is set to play a behavioral psychologist, Cristin Milioti of Black Mirror “USS Callister” will be playing a soccer mom and Stranger Things’ Joe Keery will be a gig-economy millennial. The trailer doesn’t reveal much beyond the cast/characters, though the subject of the trailer (2020) is best summed up by Leslie Jones’ statement made at the end of the trailer: “I’d say it was a trainwreck and a sh*tshow, but that would be unfair to trains and sh*t.”
Black Mirror’s Charlie Brooker had this to say in a statement: “Those who only know me through Black Mirror may not realize that when not writing speculative sci-fi about people frowning at smartphones, I’ve spent years making comedy shows in the UK — including many topical comedy specials,” he said. “So to me, Death to 2020 feels like the collision of several different strands. (Do strands ‘collide’? No. Apologies). But the approach for this is quite different to most of the topical comedy I’ve done in the past. For one thing I’m not on screen presenting it — a relief for anyone watching in 4K — and it’s more character-based. In the loneliest year on record, I got to work (remotely) with writers and team members from my previous comedies, as well as many sickeningly talented people who were new to me.”
Annabel Jones followed up by saying: “This year has been unusual in many regards, but what’s unified this year is the main stories we focus on — huge global stories, stories that affect the whole world. So we knew what the structure of the show was going to be, with quite a few surprises along the way!”
