According to Snyder, Army of the Dead won’t be what the audience will be expecting. Snyder implies that the film will be a cross-genre hybrid movie consisting of the likes of Omari Hardwick, Ella Purnell, Dave Bautista, Tig Notaro and Huma Qureshi. Snyder also makes a promise to his audience that what they can expect, is an incredibly outrageous while straightforward plot centering on a team of operators seeking to infiltrate a version of Las Vegas that is infested with zombies with the goal of robbing a casino and walking away with a ton of cash.
Snyder was quoted as saying: “It is a full-blown, balls-to-the-wall zombie heist movie, so it’s genre-on-genre in a great way. So you expect pure zombie mayhem, and you get that, 100 percent. But also you get these really amazing characters on a fantastic journey. It’s going to surprise people that there’s a lot of warmth and real emotion with these great characters.”
The cross-genre hybrid film draws inspiration from his 2004’s remake of the George Romero classic Dawn of the Dead. The first look into the movie features the characters at Nevada’s Area 51 apparently planning their way into the zombie-infested sin city casinos. Snyder touched on his triumphant meeting with Netflix after the movie was scrapped by Warner Bros: “I mentioned the idea to [Netflix head of original films Scott Stuber] and he was like, ‘That is the movie! Go write that movie and let’s make it.’ I was like, ‘What, do you mean now?’ And he’s like, ‘Go write it tomorrow and we’ll do shoot it in a week.’”
The hype gained by the film has given rise to a 4-hr prequel series also financed by Netflix. The prequel series will b covering the origins of the plague and will b featuring the original cast members.
