Tom Holland is set to star in the upcoming film from the Russo Brothers titled Cherry, based on the 2018 novel from Nico Walker. The movie will be following Holland as a man from Cleveland from his time in the military to his descent into a heroin addiction that helps him cope with his PTSD.
It was explained by the Russo Brothers that Cherry is their passion project. The Russo Brothers stated that, growing up in Ohio, they were deeply affected by the opioid crisis and wanted to tell a story that helps to fight the issue of addiction. Joe Russo was quoted as saying: “We’re from Cleveland and Nico’s from Cleveland. Interestingly enough, we know a lot of people that are implied in the book. I think he’s fictionalized names and personalities. But I worked at the same restaurant that Nico worked at, 10 years apart. So he had a very similar upbringing to us. He just had a very different journey than we did.”
The movie outlines the 6 stages of Cherry’s life as he lives as a student, a lover, a junkie and a thief. Joe Russo had this to say: “The movie’s broken up into six chapters that reflect those different periods, and each one has a different tone. It’s shot with different lenses, different production design. One’s got magical realism. Another chapter is absurdism. Another is horror…There’s a bit of gonzo in it. It’s raw in its tone. He’s a character in existential crisis,”
This film is the first movie made in partnership between Tom Holland and the Russo Brothers outside of the MCU allowing the trio to work on projects that reflect the real world and its deepest problems via the power of cinema.
Cherry will be coming to theaters on Feb. 26th and will be globally available on March 12th via Apple TV+. You can catch the trailer for Cherry down below:
