The first-ever comic book centering around Batman exclusively, Batman #1 has recently been sold through Heritage Auctions for a grand total of $2.2 million USD. Originally published in 1940, the comic book sold at auction was in “near mint” condition and has broken the record for most expensive Batman Comic ever sold.
The comic that is now 80 years old was provided with a CGC score of 9.4 for its overall quality, which is a rarity for a comic book of that age. The most recent owner of the Batman #1 issue, Billy T. Gates bought it in 1979 for a total of $3,000 USD. The Heritage Auctions website describes the Batman #1 issue as “the first time in the CGC era that a Near Mint copy of one of the top five Golden Age key issues has been sold at public auction.” in addition to stating, “few key issues are as easy to judge as a Batman #1.” Heritage Auctions also stated that the yellow cover of the comic is prone to dust shadows and smudging making original version difficult to reproduce.
The sale of this Batman #1 has broken the record recently held by a Detective Comics #27 which sold 2 months ago for a whopping $1.5 million USD.
