With the re-release of Avatar in China this weekend, the film grossed $3.5 million on Friday. This took the film’s total cross to $2.7926 billion. The film is expected to reach new heights after the weekend is over.
For almost a decade, James Cameron’s sci-fi film ‘Avatar’ was the highest grossing film worldwide until the release of Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Endgame took over Avatar’s gross of $2.7897 billion with a narrow margin of $2.7902 billion. With the re-release in China, Avatar claims the number one spot once again.
The re-release of ‘Avatar’ was a strategy used by the China’s film bureau to boost re-opening of theatre sales after a year of complete lockdown and by the figures we can conclude that the strategy worked flawlessly. Avatar box office gained a total of $33.2 million after the re-release.
It may seem like a competition between Avatar and Avengers: Endgame but the ultimate winner here is Disney since both the films are properties of Disney.
